Portland Pirates 2010-2011 schedule released

The Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League announced today their schedule of games for the 2010-11 Regular Season.

The Pirates will open their 18th season of competition, the 34th season of AHL action at the Cumberland County Civic Center, on Saturday, October 9th when the Manchester Monarchs visit in a 7 p.m. start. The Pirates will celebrate the AHL’s 75th anniversary season by playing all 40 of their home games at the Civic Center for the first time since 2007-08. The home schedule features 26 weekend games. Saturday Night is Hockey Night in Portland will take place 15 times during the course of the season while the Pirates will also play eight Friday games and three Sunday games.

“Our schedule provides our fan base a great opportunity to enjoy the talents of the world class athletes and Buffalo Sabres prospects which make up our team while also delivering an exciting atmosphere and promotional pop,” said Pirates Managing Owner/CEO Brian Petrovek. “We are looking forward to an entertaining campaign in our pursuit of a Calder Cup Championship.”

Rivalries
Arch rivals Manchester, Providence and Worcester will battle the Pirates a total of 12 times each (six at home and six on the road) during the regular season. In addition, the Pirates will face Springfield and Bridgeport 10 times each.


New Start Time for Weeknight Games
All midweek night games are scheduled to start one half hour earlier than in prior years. The new 6:30 p.m. start time will allow families to attend games and still get home early and also allow for companies to take advantage of our “Corporate Two-for-Tuesday” ticket promotion (details to be announced at a later date) right after work. In addition, the Pirates will be teaming up with neighboring establishments for great food and beverage deals and additional “Two-for-Tuesday” deals that Pirates fans can take advantage of prior to enjoying exciting Pirates hockey action!

Collectible Bobblehead Series
2010-2011 also marks the return of Pirates Bobbleheads to the Cumberland County Civic Center. This season, the Pirates will be giving away likenesses of Jhonas Enroth (December 7th), Tyler Ennis (January 25th), and Nathan Gerbe (March 8th) as part of the Pirates first-ever Tuesday Mini-Bobblehead Collectible Series.

Additional Premium Giveaways
Other confirmed giveaway nights (with more to follow) include JobsInMe.com Magnetic Schedule Giveaway Night at the Home Opener on Saturday, October 9th; Time Warner Cable Pirates Hat Giveaway on Sunday, March 13th; Five County Credit Union Pirates T-shirt Giveaway on Saturday, December 18th and the Brown Fox Printing Team Photo Giveaway on Saturday, March 5th.

Matinee Action
The Pirates will also host two holiday matinee games (1 p.m. start times) during the season on October 11th (Columbus Day) and February 21st (President’s Day) giving parents and children who have the day off from work or school the opportunity to take in great Pirates action.
The schedule will also feature the Pirates second annual School Day Game facing off at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 22nd. Last season, 23 Maine schools and nearly 4,000 students enjoyed the game, a special educational day of hockey full of fun and interactive learning activities that promoted physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Sudzie Sundays
The Pirates will face-off three times on home ice on Sundays (4 p.m. start time) during the course of the 2010-11 season offering fans an opportunity to cash in on the savings of a Suzdie Sunday Family Five Pack. Five Main Deck Tickets, five Daily Scrolls, five free Chuck-a-Pies and a voucher for a single Sudzie Auto Wash all for only $60 (valued at $110 if purchased individually).

Community Support
The Pirates will also continue to make a positive impact in the community during their schedule of games. The third annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game, sponsored by Maine medical Center, in support of the American Cancer Society will be played on Saturday, October 23rd. Members of the Pirates will be sporting the one of a kind “Pink” jerseys and socks during the game. Group tickets to this game are being sold at $15/ticket, with $5 from each ticket being donated to Making Strides. The Pirates have set a goal of raising $10,000 through the sale of these group tickets.

A salute to Veterans & Armed Forces Night will be held Saturday, November 13th. The Pirates will be hosting the Veteran’s Day Weekend game in collaboration with News Talk WLOB 95.5 FM in recognition of all the men and women who have served as members of the United States Armed Forces.

The Pirates will also support the American Heart Association with a Go Red Game on Saturday, February 5th and an Autism Awareness Night on Wednesday, April 6th.

Other events and promotions scheduled for the upcoming season include the annual Kid’s New Year’s Game on Friday, December 31st at 5:30 p.m. The game, an expected sellout, will mark the 16th season the Pirates have celebrated New Year’s featuring New England’s largest indoor fireworks display at the conclusion of the game. Post game team skates are scheduled for October 11th, February 21st and March 13th while the Teddy Bear Toss will take place December 4th, Motor Sports Night is scheduled for January 22nd, the annual UNUM Pirates Hall of Fame Induction ceremony is slated for March 26th and Shirts off Their Backs/Creative Awards Team Awards and Fan Appreciation Game will be played April 10th.

The Portland Pirates, the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, are entering their 18th season as a member of the American Hockey League while the Cumberland County Civic Center hosts AHL play for its 34th season. Calder Cup Champions in 1994-95 and finalists in 1996-97, the Pirates have been home to a total of 230 players who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 85 percent of today’s NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the ninth year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2009-10.
