T.J. Brennan scored with 3:12 remaining in regulation and David Leggio made 33 saves to lead the Portland Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Connecticut Whale in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 3,458 at the XL Center.
Justin Bowers and Mark Parrish also scored for the Pirates, who improved to 30-15-4-1 with the win. Corey Tropp also collected two assists.
Tim Kennedy and Chad Kolarik scored for the Whale, now 24-21-2-5.
Bowers opened the scoring deflecting a puck home for his second in as many games. Parrish followed shortly after to give Portland a 2-0 advantage only to see Kennedy get the Whale on the scoreboard just 46 seconds later to complete the first period scoring and give the Pirates a 2-1 lead after one. Kolarik netted the lone goal of the second, his third in the last two games, to send the two teams into the third tied at two. Brennan netted the eventual game winner with the only score of the final period.
The Whale out shot the Pirates 35-32 in the game as Leggio posted his third win over Connecticut this season.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were all from the Pirates. Brennan was the first, Leggio the second and Tropp the third.
Portland is back in action with road games Friday and Sunday. Friday the Pirates travel to Manchester to take on the Monarchs in a 7 p.m. start. Sunday it’s off to Bridgeport to take on the Sound Tigers in a 3 p.m. game at Arena at Harbor Yard. Both games can be heard live on 95.5 News Talk WLOB or on-line at www.portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show 15 minutes prior to the opening faceoff.
