NHL Trade Deadline: Players with Maine ties involved
The NHL Trade deadline has come and gone, but players that have played here in the state of Maine were involved the proceedings. Among them:
Former UMaine Black Bear and Portland Pirate Dustin Penner was traded from Edmonton to the LA Kings. He will wear #25, his number at UMaine.
Former Lewiston Maineiac Michael Chaput was traded to Columbus along with Lisbon, Maine native and Black Bears alum Greg Moore, for Tom Sestito.
Boston Bruins acquire former Maineiac Chaput
The Bruins traded Providence tough guy Brian McGrattan and defenseman Sean Zimmerman to Anaheim on Sunday, and in exchange received forwards David Lalibert and Stefan Chaput, the latter an alumni of the Lewiston Maineiacs.
Chaput played for the Maineiacs from 2004 to 2008, and was on the 2007 team that won the President's Cup. He has 7 points in 27 games for the AHL's Syracuse Crunch this season.

Pirates fall to Springfield
Tom Sestito and Nikita Filatov each netted a goal and an assist to lead the Springfield Falcons to a 4-1 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League played in front of 3,731 at the MassMutual Center.
Ben Guite and Tomas Kubalik registered the other goals for the Falcons, who improved to 30-26-1-3 with their third consecutive win.
Nick Crawford netted the lone Pirates goal. Portland dropped to 34-17-5-2 with the loss.
The Falcons got off to a quick start as Filatov and Guite scored in the opening six minutes to put the home side up 2-0. Crawford brought the Pirates back to within one with five-and-a-half minutes left in the first to leave the Falcons up 2-1 after one. There was no scoring in the second sending the two teams into the third in a one-goal game. Sestito and Kubalik scored in the third to complete the scoring.
The Falcons out shot the Pirates 32-27 in the game as Jhonas Enroth took the loss.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were all from the Falcons. Filatov was the first, Sestito the second and goaltender David LeNeveu the third.
The Pirates will be back in action at the Civic Center on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. as the UNUM Challenge continues against the Worcester Sharks.

Maine completes sweep of 4th ranked Merrimack
Seniors Jeff Dimmen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Josh Van Dyk (Woodstock, Ontario) combined to score three goals and dish out three assists as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team cruised past fourth-ranked Merrimack 7-1
on senior night at Alfond Arena. In addition, rookie goalie Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) set the Black Bear school record for consecutive scoreless minutes at 202:49.
Maine improves to 16-10-6 on the season with the win and 13-8-4 in Hockey East play. Merrimack falls to 21-7-4 overall and 15-7-3 in conference play.
Mark Nemec (Rouses Point, N.Y.) opened the scoring action just 2:20 into the first period when his shot from the blueline went through traffic and into the back of the net. For Nemec, it was his second goal of the season. Maine took the 1-0 lead
into the first intermission, behind a 14-6 edge in shots on goal.
The second period came with a flurry of goals. The first came just 41 seconds into the period when Brian Flynn (Lynnfield, Mass,.) notched his 18th of the season on a delayed penalty. After circling the net, Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) was
credited with his 26th assist on the season as he slipped the puck in front to Flynn. Tanner House (Cochrane, Alberta), also recorded his 19th assist of the season on the play.
Maine took a 3-0 lead less than a minute later on the ensuing power play. Jeff Dimmen scored from just above the face-off circle with assists from Kyle Beattie (Avondale, Ariz.) and Van Dyk. However, Merrimack responded with its first goal of the
weekend as Jeff Velleca broke through the Maine defense after Chris Barton won a puck in the corner and fed it to Velleca in the low slot. Jordan Heywood also assisted on the goal, which snapped Sullivan’s scoreless streak.
Maine was able to counter with two more goals at 14:20 and 16:47 of the second period to bring the score to 5-1. Van Dyk scored his second goal of the weekend on a shot from the blueline to extend Maine’s lead to 4-1. Beattie gave the Black Bears a
5-1 lead moments later with his sixth goal of the season from Robby Dee (Plymouth, Minn.) and Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario).
Nyquist added his 16th goal of the second just 2:53 into the second period when he scored on a shot just outside the crease. Flynn and Will O’Neill (Salem, Mass.) each assisted on the goal. Maine scored its fourth power play goal of the game when
Dimmen notched his second of the night 5:26 into the second period. The four power play goals were a season-high for the Black Bears.
Maine finished the game with a commanding 39-19 edge in shots on goal. The Black Bears converted 4-of-8 power play chances, while holding Merrimack scoreless on seven opportunities.
Sullivan stopped 18 of 19 shots that he faced, while setting the mark for consecutive scoreless minutes at Maine. He broke the old mark of 193:45 set by former standout and current NHL goaltender Jimmy Howard. He improves to 9-5-1 on the season.
Joe Cannata made 19 saves in 40 minutes of action and picks up the loss. He falls to 21-7-4 on the season. Sam Marotta played the third period. He made 13 saves.
Before and after the game on Saturday Maine honored seniors: Mike Banwell (Scarborough, Ontario), Van Dyk, Dimmen, Dee and House.
The Black Bears return to action when they close the 2010-2011 regular season with a pair of games at UMass March 25 and 26.

Black Bears rebound
Joey Diamond (Long Beach, N.Y.) broke a 2-2 tie midway through the third period and Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) iced the game with an empty-net goal as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team skated to a 4-2 win over Vermont on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. Maine improves to 12-10-6 on the season and 9-8-4 in Hockey East play. Vermont falls to 7-16-5 overall and 5-12-4 in conference play.
Nyquist set a school record when he got the puck from Tanner House (Cochrane, Alberta) and fired a shot past Vermont goalie Rob Madore on the opening face-off, just six seconds into the game. It bested the previous record of eight seconds that Bruce Major set against Northern Michigan on Nov. 16, 1985.
Maine was then whistled for two quick penalties and UVM reaped the reward of a five-on-three goal. Sebastian Stalberg beat Maine goalie Shawn Sirman (Blezard Valley, Ontario) with a shot that found the upper right corner of the goal at just 1:39 of
the first. Jack Downing and Chris McCarthy each assisted on the goal. The Catamounts took a 2-1 lead when Downing tipped a McCarthy shot from the blueline past Sirman on the power play at 15:25 of the first. Josh Burrows picked up an assist on the goal.
Maine tied the game with a power play goal at 13:52 of the second period. Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) had a shot from the point that Madore stopped, but the rebound when right to Brian Flynn (Lynnfield, Mass.) who was alone just outside the
crease. Flynn easily beat Madore for his 14th goal of the season. Nyquist also picked up an assist on the play.
Maine notched the game-winner at 12:38 of the third period. Robby Dee (Plymouth, Minn.) won the puck to Will O’Neill (Salem, Mass.). O’Neill fired the puck down the ice and Diamond controlled it behind the net. He then carried the puck around the
net and beat Madore for his 10th goal of the season.
Nyquist added an empty-net unassisted score with just 22 seconds remaining to ice the game for the Black Bears. For Nyquist, it was his fourth straight game with a goal and 13th of the season.
Maine outshot Vermont 39-19 in the game. The Black Bears were 1-for-8 on the power play, while Vermont finished 2-for-7.
Shawn Sirman made 17 saves in goal and improves to 4-2-3 on the season. Madore made 35 saves. He falls to 7-16-5.
The Black Bears return to action on Friday, Feb. 18 when they travel to UMass Lowell. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM.

Pirates knock off the Whale
T.J. Brennan scored with 3:12 remaining in regulation and David Leggio made 33 saves to lead the Portland Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Connecticut Whale in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 3,458 at the XL Center.
Justin Bowers and Mark Parrish also scored for the Pirates, who improved to 30-15-4-1 with the win. Corey Tropp also collected two assists.
Tim Kennedy and Chad Kolarik scored for the Whale, now 24-21-2-5.
Bowers opened the scoring deflecting a puck home for his second in as many games. Parrish followed shortly after to give Portland a 2-0 advantage only to see Kennedy get the Whale on the scoreboard just 46 seconds later to complete the first period scoring and give the Pirates a 2-1 lead after one. Kolarik netted the lone goal of the second, his third in the last two games, to send the two teams into the third tied at two. Brennan netted the eventual game winner with the only score of the final period.
The Whale out shot the Pirates 35-32 in the game as Leggio posted his third win over Connecticut this season.

Maine's Tanner House named LOWE'S Finalist
Ten NCAA® hockey student-athletes who excel both on and off the ice were selected as finalists today for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in hockey. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The list of finalists follows this release. Maine’s Tanner House (Cochrane, Alberta) was named one of the 10 finalists. He is the lone Hockey East student-athlete to have been named a finalist.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 20 candidates announced in October. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote via the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website or on the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through March 20. Fan votes will be combined with media and coaches votes to determine the winner.
House is captain of the Black Bears. He has nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points on the season.
Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner April 7 at the NCAA Frozen Four® in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
House and the Black Bears return to action on Friday, Feb. 4 when they travel to New Hampshire. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM and the game will be televised on NESN.
